What is a Christian?

A Christian is a person who follows Jesus Christ. Jesus claimed to be both God and human, and he offers us eternal life in relationship with God which is what humans were created to have. This is recorded in the Bible.

So he joins the perfect Father God to us selfishness-prone humans. This offered relationship is a gift from God to humans to reverse the loneliness, pain and death which are the consequences of human selfishness (sin). A Christian is someone who has accepted the gift.

As the perfect expression of a human, Jesus went through life and then willingly took the results of our sin onto himself in his death, so that we don’t have to suffer the consequences if we don’t want to.

As the visible expression of God (the Son of God), Jesus broke the power of death. He rose up from death and joined the Father in heaven, clearing the path for us to follow in his footsteps. He then gave his spirit, the Holy Spirit, to live in his followers so that we can be like him and live in a loving and free relationship with God now.

Christians live their lives in gratitude for what Jesus has done for us. We don’t always manage to be like Jesus, but he continues to help us and encourage us as we try. So Jesus Christ the God-man is someone Christians both worship as God and look to as the example of what it means to be fully human. We try with his help to be like him. That’s why the followers of Christ soon got the nickname ‘Christ’s people’ i.e. Christians.
